Underwear is Fun to Wear

Jude started wearing underwear to school this week. We'll see how it goes! Yesterday was good, and he even pooped 3 times in the toilet.

June 2009 update - all about the pottty

Wow...I really need to keep up with this thing. Time goes so fast!!

The biggest news I think is that Jude is just about potty trained. Potty training is yet another one of those things that I thought may never happen, but then suddenly, it just did.

I still have him in pull-ups, with underwear on weekends. He's about ready for underwear all the time though. I'm going to see how he does in another week of preschool as far as going accident-free.

He has had very few accidents. One big hurdle we had was getting him to poop on the potty, after he mastered peeing. And he seems to have that down now.

The other big thing was training Mommy & Daddy. Preschool is really good b/c they have a schedule and they ask the kids probably every hour if they have to go. At home, we sometimes forget. Jude is pretty good about knowing on his own, but sometimes he forgets, too.

And then a couple of times, he peed in his pull up during the night. But I think I figured that one out, too: He needs to go potty before he goes to bed. I know, I know....sometimes I think I'm a genius! Ha!

The way we finally got him to pee on the potty in the first place was to let him run around the house naked. That is how he figured out what it felt like to pee down his leg. In other words, when he had his diaper on, those diapers absorb so quickly, I'm not even sure if Jude realized he was peeing! But when he pees on his leg, he pretty much knows it.

So I moved his little potty into the living room, and he was naked. It only took one time. He said, "Mommy, I'm peeing!", and he was peeing on the carpet, but he was able to stop it. So I told him to go sit on the potty, and he did, and finished the job! He seemed to "get it" after that.

He was so worried about the pee that was on the carpet though. I was very calm and reassuring and told him it was okay, that that is how we learn. It was super easy to clean up since we got to it so fast. It sounds like I'm a great mom, but let me tell you how I messed up back in February.

He was naked after his bath, and he started to pee on the carpet. Well, I totally overreacted. I raised my voice and told him to stop, complete with no no no!!!! We do not pee on the carpet!!

For some reason, I thought he was doing it on purpose, but really, he was just learning. Okay..I screwed up. After that, he was scared to death to be naked and walking around! He'd yell "mommy, hold me!" or scream "mommy! Put a diaper on me!!!"....oops. So I had some serious damage control to do after that.

After he started peeing on the potty, we used stickers and marshmallows as rewards. After he got so many stickers, he got to go to Chuck E. Cheese's.

Now that peeing is mastered, he gets two stickers every time he poops on the toilet. And then he'll get another trip to Chuck's.

He goes right on the big potty now, using a smaller seat that fits on top. We have one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I put away that little potty after he was able to make it to the bathroom. It was a pain in the butt to clean out the little potty all the time; so much easier to just flush it!

I still have the shake it versus wipe it dilemma. He pees sitting down, and when I tell him to shake it a little, he flips it all over the place. So he's been wiping it. Hopefully, he won't be damaged for life. I need to ask Matt what he does when he takes Jude potty, if he has him shake it or what. Since I've never had to shake those things myself, I don't really know the standard procedure.

If we are outside in our backyard, Matt has taught him to pee on the fence, lol. It's so convenient if we're already out back anyway. It's so cute for some reason. He pulls down his pants himself and assumes the stance; I guess boys are just inborn to know how to do that! And I suppose he shakes it then, who knows. Hopefully...that won't backfire on us. I don't want him peeing outside at the playground or at family get-togethers and whatnot. I'll have to reinforce to him that we only do that in our own back yard.

And we have yet to worry about public toilets really. I'm not sure if he knows they exist. Plus, we haven't been out long enough to worry about it yet. But...that won't last forever.

==========================================================

Other then that, Jude is growing fast, as you can imagine. He talks a lot, can say quite a few Chinese and Spanish words, and can basically carry on a conversation. He is also a funny kid with a good sense of humor.

He has a temper, too. When he gets upset with us, he'll say things like:

"Mommy, you made me mad!"
"Mommy, you hurt my feelings"
"Mommy, you yelled at me!" (which is not always true, btw. Sometimes it's just that I corrected him)
"I'm going to walk away!" Ha!

He wants us to play with him non-stop. He very rarely plays by himself. I don't know if he needs new toys, or what, but how many toys can a kid have? It is hard to play with him all the time like that, and when I don't, I feel guilty! It's all like the Cat's in the Cradle: "Mommy, will you play with me?" and then I'm all like there are planes to catch and bills to pay. :( Notwithstanding, I think I do a pretty good job. I think crappy parents don't think about stuff like this.

He is still in our bed, too, and it's getting crowded. I love him there, but I think he needs to be in his own room soon. Especially with me being pregnant...it's going to get less and less comfortable with three in our bed.
